SCAD, City reach 'collaboration' on controversial buses

A "collaboration among the Savannah College of Art and Design, the City of Savannah and the Downtown Neighborhood Association has led to a change that will replace the college’s new larger buses with smaller buses in mostly residential areas of the Historic District," a spokesperson for the City of Savannah said late Friday.

Earlier this year, "SCAD updated its transit operations with newer, larger buses in an effort to increase student transportation and encourage students to rely less on personal vehicles," the City says.

"After concerns were raised by downtown residents about the size of the buses impacting quality of life, the City began actively working with the residents and SCAD officials on a solution."

SCAD announced Friday that effective March 23, "the college will make adjustments to its fleet to replace the large white buses with smaller buses operating within zones where motor coaches are prohibited, encompassing most of the residential areas of the Historic District east of Lincoln Street and south of Liberty Street.…
